VANCOUVER TOURISM ATTRACTIONS

University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver campus is one of the best places to visit in the city for tourists and locals, alike. Just 25 minutes from downtownand the location of TUFH 2022—the UBC campus is a special destination, brimming with West Coast scenery, world-class attractions, and warm hospitality. Stroll through an ancient rainforest, or wander a traditional Japanese garden. UBC is also home to the Museum of Anthropology, the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and, most importantly, the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

Distance: Everything is in walking distance, given that TUFH 2022 is located on the UBC campus.

Art Galleries

Vancouver is home to many art galleries, with a large focus on the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Bill Reid Gallery.

The Vancouver Art Gallery was founded in 1931 and is recognized as one of North America’s most respected and innovative visual arts institutions. It features many inventive exhibits and pays special attention to the accomplishments of First Nations artists and art of the Asia Pacific region.

The Bill Reid Gallery was named after the Haida artist, Bill Reid, who passed away in 1998. The Gallery is home to the Simon Fraser University Bill Reid Collection and features special exhibits of contemporary Indigenous Art of the Northwest Coast of North America.

Science World

Science World, located in downtown Vancouver, is home to many interactive exhibitions and programs. It is a British Columbia-based non-profit organization that brings science, technology, engineering, art, design, and math learning opportunities to people across the province.

Distance: 30-minute drive or 45-minute public transit ride from conference venue.

Cost: Adult ticket $22 USD. Tickets may need to be purchased in advance.

Granville Island

Granville Island attracts millions of visitors from Vancouver and around the world each year. Located along the water near downtown Vancouver, Granville Island is home to the Public Market, as well as many shops, galleries, restaurants, breweries, distilleries, artists, and designers.

Whale Watching

Vancouver is one of the world’s best locations for whale watching. Thousands of whales migrate yearly through the waters between March and October. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

The Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, just north of downtown Vancouver, features a 450 feet long suspension bridge that hangs 230 feet above the Capilano River. While the bridge is a main tourist attraction, the park is also home to a cliffside suspended walkway, treetop adventures, and Kia’Palano, an educational centre focusing on the Skwxwú7mesh and Tsleil-Waututh Nation people.

Distance: 40-minute drive or 1.5-hour public transit ride (with multiple transfers) from conference venue.

Stanley Park

Stanley Park is one of Vancouver’s main tourist destinations. The public park is home to many forest trails, beaches, lakes, parks, and the Vancouver Aquarium. It also features a 10km loop where locals and tourists can cycle, run, or walk along the seawall.

Queen Elizabeth Park

Queen Elizabeth Park features beautiful floral displays and amazing views of the city of Vancouver. It is home to the Bloedel Conservatory, Seasons in the Park, as well as many activities, like pitch and putt, tennis, and lawn bowling.

Spanish Banks Beach

One of the many beaches in Vancouver,  Spanish Banks Beach features beautiful views of both the north shore mountains and the downtown Vancouver skyline. A beautiful spot to enjoy a swim, learn to kayak or windsurf, or just lounge on the sandy beaches.

Pacific Spirit Regional Park

Pacific Spirit Regional Park is a 874 hectares park located in the University Endowment Lands, on Point Grey to the west of the city of Vancouver, British Columbia.  The trails in the park are popular with local residents and accessible year-round.

Local Mountains

 
Grouse Mountain

Grouse Mountain, situated in North Vancouver, is a 30-minute drive from downtown Vancouver and a staple tourist destination. Some features include The Grouse Grind, a 2.9 km trail up the face of the mountain, commonly referred to as “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster”, Mountain Ropes Adventure, Skyride Gondola, and Wildlife Refuge.

Cypress Mountain

Cypress Mountain features five amazing hikes, ranging from beginner to intermediate. The hikes immerse you in the best that North Vancouver has to offer, with rewarding views. Cypress Mountain is also home to the longest mountain coaster in Canada, the Eagle Coaster.

Distance: 1-hour drive, inaccessible by public transit.

Squamish

Squamish Village is an hour-long drive from downtown Vancouver. The scenic drive, itself, is one amazing reason to visit. With winding roads, and views of the ocean, mountains, and islands, the drive is one to remember. Squamish Village features the Sea to Sky Gondola, which takes you to beautiful views of Howe Sound, a 100-metre long suspension bridge, walking trailsand even a cafe with stunning patio.

Whistler

Whistler Village, home to Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, is well known for its skiing and snowboarding. However, it is just as exciting in the summer months! The village features many restaurants, shops, and daily excursions. The Scandinave Spa is a great place for rest and relaxation. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains feature the Whistler Bike Park, Peak 2 Peak Gondola, and many hiking and walking tours.
