Travelling to Vancouver

YVR Airport Information

The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is Canada’s second busiest airport. Fifty-six airlines serve YVR, connecting people and businesses non-stop to more than 125 destinations in Canada, the United States, and around the world. Downtown Vancouver is easily accessible by public transit.

YVR Airport to UBC

There are many options to get from YVR International Airport to the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus. 

Taxi to UBC
Taking a taxi is simple. There are designated taxi areas outside the airport, once you deplane and receive your luggage. A flat rate (see: Fare Zone) of $30 USD will get you to the UBC campus.

Public Transit to UBC
Public transit (Skytrain and bus) is also easily accessible from the airport. Follow signs for the Skytrain (Canada Line-Waterfront). After eight stops, at the Broadway-City Hall Station, transfer to the 99 Line bus, which will take you directly to the UBC campus. More information is available here.

Ride Share to UBC
Ride Share programs, such as Uber and Lyft, are also available in Vancouver.

YVR Airport to Downtown Vancouver

There are many options to get from YVR International Airport to downtown Vancouver. 

Taxi to Downtown Vancouver
Taking a taxi is simple. There are designated taxi areas outside the airport, once you deplane and receive your luggage. A flat rate (see: Fare Zone) of $25 USD will get you downtown.

Public Transit to Downtown Vancouver
Public transit (Skytrain and bus) is also easily accessible from the airport. Follow signs to the Skytrain (Canada Line-Waterfront). After 11 stops, depart at Vancouver City Centre station. Most hotels and hostels will be within walking distance of this station. More information here.

Ride Share to UBC
Ride Share programs, such as Uber and Lyft, are also available in Vancouver.

Getting Around Vancouver and UBC

There are several ways to travel around the UBC campus and downtown Vancouver. 

Public transit is an efficient, low-cost option. More information is available here.

Other options include Uber and taxi. 

Vancouver also features a bike share program, called Shaw Mobi Bikes, and is a excellent environmentally-friendly way to see the city’s many sights. UBC also features its own bike share program, called HOPR.

Vancouver Weather in August

Towards Unity for Health 2022 will occur during the Canadian summer, known as the “dry season” in Vancouver. In August, Vancouver weather averages between 14 and 26 degrees Celsius, with mostly sunny days. On occasion, there may be a bit of rainfall.

On a summer’s day, there is nothing better than cooling down on a beach—and in Vancouver, including on the UBC campus, there are lots of options to choose from.

Population Statistics

Vancouver is a diverse, multi-cultural city with residents from around the world and a population of more than 630,000 people. Over 5 million people call British Columbia home. According to the 2016 census, 270,585 individuals in British Columbia identify as Indigenous, representing 5.9% of the total provincial population. Of the total Indigenous population in British Columbia, the First Nations population is the largest (63.8%), followed by the Métis (33.0%) and Inuit (0.6%).

Vancouver’s tap water is safe to drink without additional filtration. We encourage you to make a sustainable choice by drinking tap water in reusable water bottles or cups, rather than purchasing bottled water.
